The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) on Tuesday welcomed three newly appointed members who were officially sworn in during a ceremony held at the Supreme Court of Kenya. The ceremony, presided over by Hon. Chief Justice Martha Koome, saw Ms. Peris Muthoni Kimani, Mr. Benjamin Juma Imai, and Prof. Collette Akoth Suda take their oath of office.
Commissioner Edwin Cheluget extended his congratulations and pledged his full support to the new members as they begin their journey within the Commission. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, also commended their appointment, expressing gratitude to the appointing authority and assuring the Commissioners of his support in fulfilling their new responsibilities.
Chairperson of the Selection Panel, Arthur Osiya, congratulated the trio, noting the high expectations placed upon them and urging them to discharge their duties with excellence.
In her address, the Chief Justice emphasized the Commission’s pivotal role in fostering a professional and citizen-focused police service.
“You are now the custodians and implementers of the Constitution’s vision for democratic policing in our country, entrusted with the sacred task of building a police service that is professional, humane, responsive, ethical, and respected by the people it serves” she said.
She called upon the newly sworn-in Commissioners to uphold the principles of integrity, impartiality, transparency, and strict adherence to the Constitution. The Chief Justice further affirmed the Judiciary’s commitment to working closely with the Commission in strengthening the Criminal Justice System to build public trust.
The newly sworn-in Commissioners bring a wealth of experience and leadership that is expected to significantly enhance the Commission’s mission of dignified and professional police service.
Ms. Peris Muthoni Kimani brings 39 years of exemplary service in the National Police Service, having retired as Assistant Inspector General in 2022. Her leadership journey included roles such as Director of Public Complaints at the DCI, Division Criminal Investigations Officer in Lang’ata, and Officer-in-Charge at Ruaraka and Karuri Police Stations.
Mr. Benjamin Juma Imai joins with over 40 years of service in the Administration Police. His distinguished career includes senior leadership roles such as Deputy Commandant of the SGB VIP Protection Unit, Regional AP Commander for Nyanza, and Commandant of the Administration Police Basic Training Unit. He also played critical roles in operations across various regions including the Boni Forest.
Prof. Collette Akoth Suda, an accomplished scholar and public servant, brings a wealth of expertise in research, education, and policy. With a PhD and Master’s degrees in Rural Sociology and Community Development from the University of Missouri, and a BA from the University of Nairobi, Prof. Suda has held several senior government roles including Principal Secretary in the State Department for Gender, and CAS in the Ministries of Education, Energy, and Gender.
